How well do you know your bible…

1/10? 4/10? 8/10? – Is it even important to know the bible?

I have heard it said, “If Jesus actually lived then died then rose again – then all the rest is rock and roll.”

2011 is a year of learning the scripture for me.  I am reading through the bible for the very first time in its entirety.  For the most part it has been anything but mechanical.  So far, Genesis and Exodus have been extremely thought provoking to my belief of how the world began.

A few days ago I was sitting in my kitchen - eating cereal in my boxers - when a knock came at the door.  “Come on in” I shouted as I really hoped it wasn’t a stranger. Or a girl.

There was silence so I sprinted upstairs threw on some clothes and came down to be greeted by a Jehovah Witness.

As we chatted, it was creepy how many aspects of scripture we agreed on (garden of eden, jesus lived and died, God will come back one day and Jesus will rule the earth…) In fact by the end of it I was wondering if I was a JW! - ha. (don’t worry I googled it after – and I’m definitely NOT a Jehovah Witness.

The main observation I made during the conversation was that this man was using scripture to back up everything.  I’d ask a question and he’d fumble through a few wrong verses before finding just the one he needed to support his theology.

Could I do that? No.

And so here is a challenge to you. Are you reading the book? If yes then great.  But furthermore – are we using what we are learning.…

Studying/meditating/hearing and memorizing scripture – is it actually important?

I would argue that the scriptures are indeed the most important part of evangelizing, defending your faith, and personal spiritual growth with Christ.

I just want to highlight the first aspect – Evangelizing.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ”. (Romans 10:17)

Unfortunately most people don’t think, “Because the bible says so!” is a good enough answer. You might be scared that your friends will shut you down right away saying the bible is just a made up story.

We used to sing - “The bible tells me so”. But is this still a legitimate phrase?

You are required to answer for the hope you have. Do you have any hope outside what you know from the scriptures?

As you bet your life and eternity on the resurrection of Jesus (if you are a Christian), you are saying ‘because the bible says so’.  Because you believe in something that you have never seen – you will seem like a fool to some for believing the bible.

You will be a fool for Christ - and I think it’s a pretty good place to be.
