It’s Sunday.
I walked into the church doors a few minutes late (I rode my bike so give me a break). I took off my coat and turned to see a select few people in the large crowd (mainly the front rowers) rocking full out to the songs with hands lifted/swaying and feet actually elevating off the ground.
Sometimes I can even see the wrinkles on the outside of their eyes because they are closing them so tightly. Now thats a passionately closed eye for God.
But I must admit, it usually takes me a good few songs to get into the ‘mood’ of worship.
Now surely this isn’t because God is any greater during the slow songs with huge bridges… and so why do I come into worship with my barrier up?
If you are human then your emotions are up and down. And usually…. Emotions ↓ = God Praising ↓. Emotions ↑ = God Praising ↑.
It was something I considered while worshiping this morning and again right now as I listen/play worship music tonight. It’s bringing a whole new meaning to David’s Psalm 103 “Bless the Lord, O my soul”.
Maybe sometimes we’ve got to give our head, our will, our soul, our emotions a good old fashion wake up call and check ourselves at the door. The reality is crazy awesome simple: God is great and worshiping him is what we are made to do.
The reason I uploaded this video is because I think this band knows how I’m feeling. I heard an interview of them where the front man spoke (in a glorious irish or something accent) into the feeling of putting barriers up during worship. They wrote a song about it and they play it specifically at the beginning of a service in agreement with David singing “O my soul”.
Plus it’s hard to find decent Christian Indie Music.
