I know my last 3 posts have been about music…. But I will always remember what I read in “Confessions” by St. Augustine (I know so liberal arts of me right?).
Thus vacillate I between dangerous pleasure and tried soundness; being inclined rather (though I pronounce no irrevocable opinion upon the subject) to approve of the use of singing in the church, that so by the delights of the ear the weaker minds may be stimulated to a devotional frame. Yet when it happens to me to be more moved by the singing than by what is sung, I confess myself to have sinned criminally, and then I would rather not have heard the singing.
Worship music is a dangerous thing. We’ve all been there - marvelling at a sweet voice, or dazed by the talented drummer who’s putting on a good show in the back. In St. Augustine’s day, it was a heated battle over whether or music should be allowed in church or if they should stick to simply chanting hymns. He talks about the benefit of music - which is the ability to leap the walls that restrict devotion.
I’m a melody lover - and so in the case of this song the first line of the chorus “oh my soul” just hits home. But lest I forget the words represented in the catchy melody line. ”Oh my Soul” - Is a call to self worship… It’s a call to not fall into the trap of the tune - but rather the worship of God.
It also might be worth it to revisit a song I posted before: http://youtu.be/SswMKsFaHWE?hd=1
